Canton's Gervasi Vineyard wins platinum medal for Sognata Ice Wine

CANTON – Gervasi Vineyard has exciting news again. The Canton-based winery was awarded a platinum medal for its Sognata Ice Wine at the 2022 Great American International Wine Competition.

The competition, held April 23 and 24 in Rochester, New York, had a total of 1,200 entries from 195 wineries around the world.  Endo Spheres

"I couldn’t be more excited and prouder of our winery team. To receive a platinum medal for Sognata at our first wine competition of 2022 is a real testament to the outstanding work of our employees," Scott Swaldo, CEO/general manager for GV Destinations, said in a prepared statement. 

The judging panel consisted of the most influential people in the wine industry, including masters of wine, master sommeliers, sommeliers, educators, enologists, winemakers, retailers, importers, and wine industry writers and consultants.

Sognata Ice Wine is a dessert wine made from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. According to the statement released by Gervasi Vineyard, the sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing a more concentrated grape juice to be pressed from the frozen grapes.

This results in a smaller amount of a more concentrated and richer wine. The wine is intense and sweet with aromas of honey, pear, apricot and tangerine.

"I have been sending wine to the Great American International competition for several years now, and I always appreciate the caliber of their judges," Gervasi head winemaker David Smith said in the prepared statement. "Our wines have a rich history and are very diverse to the palate. I am very pleased and honored with the competition’s results."

The Sognata Ice Wine wasn't Gervasi’s only award winner. The winery also brought home a silver medal for its Sauvignon Blanc Fioretto, and six bronze medals for its Piove (riesling), Brigante (sweet red blend), Bellina (chardonnay), Celebrazione (blend of merlot and marquette), Romanza (rosé), and Barile (cabernet sauvignon aged in bourbon barrels).

All GV Destination restaurants offer the award-winning wines. The wines also can be purchased from The Still House, The Crush House and The Marketplace Gift Shop, which recently expanded.

Cryo T Shock Machine The winery recently announced plans for another expansion. The 55-acre estate, at 1700 55th St. NE, plans to open The Spa, The Cave, The Rickhouse and more warehouse and distribution space next spring.
